Upper Endoscopy/gastroscopy/OGD

This is a procedure where a thin flexible tube, with a camera at the tip, called endoscope is used to investigate, diagnose and treat diseases of the oesophagus, stomach and part of small intestines (Duodenum) by visualising the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Upper Endoscopy is used in patients who complains of persistent nausea/vomiting, difficulty swallowing. Unexplained weight loss, persistent heartburn despite treatment. Sensation of a lump stuck in the throat, persistent hiccups/belching. Ulcers or an Epigastric/upper abdominal pain, which does not resolve with treatment. The endoscope is put through the mouth. 

Percutaneous Endoscopy Gastrostomy (PEG insertion)

This procedure involves inserting a feeding tube into your stomach with the help of endoscope in order to help/supplement feeding. It may be done in patients with difficulty swallowing from various causes including cancer of the mouth/tongue, pharynx or oesophagus, head and neck trauma, neurological disorders like stroke, dementia, and myasthenia Gravis

Orbera Weight loss procedure (Intragastric Balloon Placement)

This is a procedure where a balloon is put into the stomach with the help of an endoscope, filled with salty water, and kept for 6 or 12 months to help with weight loss. The balloon is removed after 6 or 12 months or can be removed early.  The procedure can be done in the doctor’s office/rooms   or theatre. The total procedure takes about 20 minutes. The procedure is done under moderate or deep sedation and patient is sent home the same day. Patients can lose up to 15% of total body weight. This procedure if for those patients who have failed lifestyle changes or medications.

We see patients with the following digestive

  1. Persistent heartburn/acid reflux  despite treatment or endoscopy

  2. Sensation of a lump stuck in the throat or throat irritation

  3. Persistent Nausea or vomiting or eating small quantities

  4. Epigastric pain or burning or ulcers

  5. Bloating, distension, passing a lot of gas

  6. Constipation or Diarrhoea

  7. Anaemia

  8. Bleeding through the back passage.

  9. Chronic abdominal pain/discomfort that does not go away despite various investigations and treatment.

Oesophageal Variceal Banding

This procedure is done with an endoscope to help stop bleeding from dilated and bleeding veins in the oesophagus (Bleeding oesophageal varices). This procedure is done under sedation. It is done in patients who have chronic liver diseases who come with vomiting blood or endoscopy shows very large veins at risk of rupture or veins, which are bleeding. This procedure may be repeated few times until veins have disappeared. Patients may be put on some medications to prevent veins from bleeding.

Oesophageal Stenting/GI luminal stents

This procedure is used to put a stent across an obstruction in the oesophagus, small (Duodenum) or large intestines (Colon). The obstruction may be due to a growth/tumour/cancer or narrowing which can be non-cancerous or cancerous. If the stent is put in the oesophagus, it will improve swallowing and nutrition. If it is in the duodenum, it will relieve obstruction and improve nutrion

Oesophageal Dilatation 

This procedure involves dilating or enlarging the narrowing in the oesophagus to improve swallowing and nutrition. It is done in patients with difficult in swallowing because of narrowing or obstruction. Narrowing or obstruction could be due to cancer or chronic acid reflux.

Trans nasal Endoscopy (TNE)

This is a procedure where a thin flexible tube, with a camera at the tip, called endoscope is used to investigate, diagnose and treat diseases of the oesophagus, stomach and part of small intestines(Duodenum) by visualising the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Upper Endoscopy is used in patients who complains of persistent nausea/vomiting, difficulty swallowing. Unexplained weight loss, persistent heartburn despite treatment. Sensation of a lump stuck in the throat, persistent hiccups/belching. Ulcers or an Epigastric/upper abdominal pain, which does not resolve with treatment.  The endoscope is put through the nose, causes less discomfort, and is done without sedation. It is convenient for people who may not need sedation or who are busy.
